Mindy Kaling Talks 'The Mindy Project,' B.J. Novak And Marriage With InStyle

Fox might have cancelled “The Mindy Project,” but Mindy Kaling knows her show took risks others might not have dared take, like a provocative joke about women “having it all.”

The actress, who produces, writes and stars in the show, is on the cover of the June 2015 issue of InStyle magazine. Kaling spoke with the magazine about her show — which she has hinted might not actually be ending — and its humorous social commentary.

“There was one joke that I’m surprised was not flagged,” Kaling told InStyle. “The character Danny doesn’t want Mindy to go back to San Francisco to start a fertility clinic; he wants her to stay in New York, stop working, and take care of their family … She’s like, ‘It’s the 20th century, Danny. A woman can work and have a baby with no problem. I mean, rich women can.'”

“It was such a risky joke, but I find it utterly true,” she continued. “The only people writing those articles [about having it all] are women who are doing very well or come from money. But we make it sound like it’s a totally universal thing.”

In the cover story, Kaling also opened up about her relationship with “The Office” co-star B.J. Novak (“weird as hell” and a “romantically charged camaraderie with loud arguments”) as well as the death of her mother and why their relationship makes her want a family someday.

“I don’t have a particular urge to get married, but I do know with certainty that I want to have kids, because my relationship with [my mom] was so special,” she said.
